Macao is phasing in digital identity cards that can be accessed through the Macao One Account app, according to multiple media reports.
The move will mean that residents will no longer need to show physical ID cards in many instances.
Speaking at a press conference last Friday, Secretary for Administration and Justice Cheong Weng Chon said digital ID cards could first be used at border checkpoints as early as June or July before being accepted in other official transactions.

“We need to do it step by step as an ID card is the most important document for residents,” he told the media.
A bill to bring in the electronic form of identification has reportedly passed the Executive Council and will come before the legislature.
Macao ID card holders aged 18 and up can already use the Macao One Account app to apply for passports for themselves or on behalf of their children over five.
