Teledifusão de Macau (TDM) made a profit of around 17 million patacas in 2023, recovering from the two years of consecutive losses that it suffered during the pandemic, its financial statements indicate.

The public broadcaster says its bottom line last year was an 800 percent improvement compared to the loss of 2.43 million patacas that it had racked up in 2022. TDM stated that its growth in earnings was a result of the rapid recovery of Macao’s economy in 2023.

TDM’s operating income meanwhile increased by 3.48 million patacas year-on-year, while its additional income grew by 9.69 million patacas, an almost 1.2-fold increase.

Last year proved to be a significant year for the television channel, with the signing of cooperation agreements with the broadcasters of five Portuguese-speaking African countries in August. Two months later, the company commenced broadcasting in the Pearl River Delta, an area with roughly 100 million inhabitants.

As well, the television station began operating its first Hengqin newsroom on a trial basis in August 2023 before formally opening it in January of this year.

With a total of six TV channels and two radio stations, TDM is the main local broadcaster in Macao, providing residents with content in Cantonese, Mandarin, Portuguese and English.
