Hong Kong confirmed 106 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, a fall of more than a quarter from the record high the previous day.

Among the new cases, 98 were locally transmitted, including 50 with no known sources of infection.

The latest figures brought the city’s Covid-19 tally to 2,884 with 22 related deaths.

A daily high was set on Monday, when the city recorded 145 new cases and four deaths.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch at the Centre for Health Protection, said about 85 people also tested preliminary positive.

Hong Kong has seen more than 100 new cases a day since July 22, when 113 people were confirmed as being infected.

Stricter social-distancing measures, including further reducing the number of people gathering in public from four to two and a complete ban on dine-in services in restaurants, will come into effect on Wednesday.
