Beijing’s senior official on Macao affairs, Xia Baolong, is arriving today for a week-long visit, according to the local government.
The director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office will be in Macao from 13 to 19 May “in order to get a better understanding on the latest developments in Macao society and its economy,” a statement read.
Xia, 70, last visited Macao a year ago, holding a meeting with Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, four policy secretaries, as well as heads of the city’s legislative and judicial branches, at Ho’s official residence on Penha Hill.

According to a government readout of that meeting, Xia Baolong tasked local offices with helping to defend state security, strengthening national identity, diversifying the economy, maximising the advantages presented by Hengqin, and improving governance.
Ho’s latest visit to Macao follows an inspection tour of Hong Kong in February.
During his visit to Macao’s neighbouring SAR, Xia met with local representatives to talk about the economy and district governance. He also attended the launch of Hong Kong’s National Security Education Day
