Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) Acting Deputy Director Leong Ka Cheng said Tuesday the city could experience four to six tropical cyclones this year, with one to two of them possibly becoming signal No. 8 typhoons.
Leong made the forecast while speaking to reporters after attending a meeting on civil defence operations held at the Transport Bureau (DSAT) where officials talked about ways to strengthen co-ordination between government bureaus when handling typhoon-related incidents.
Leong forecasts that there will be four to six typhoons this year with the first one affecting Macau at the end of June and the last one at the end of September. She said that of the four to six typhoons, two could reach signal No. 8.
According to Leong, since last year’s storms had a major impact at residents, the bureau has introduced a more advanced tropical storm forecasting system
“Typhoon forecasting depends on information about the storm’s track and wind force,” Leong was quoted by The Macau Post Daily as saying, adding “This [new system] will provide more accurate tracking information of these two factors, and in addition to other forecasting information, it will help us provide an accurate alert for a tropical storm.”(macaunews)
