Macau, China, 12 Aug – Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) Director Vanessa Kong Pek Fong announced Wednesday that a pilot survey begins Friday to prepare for the 2011 population census in August next year.
In order to prepare for the big-scale census to be carried out on August 12 next year, a pilot survey that will run from Friday until August 27 will be conducted in the designated areas, and a post-enumeration survey will be carried out next month to evaluate the pilot survey’s coverage ratio.
According to Kong, next year’s census is expected to result in a population of over 600,000 and to cover about 280,000 buildings units.
At the end of last year, the number of building units stood at 230,000.
Macau’s estimated population amounted to 544,600 at the end of June.
"Macau’s population is small, so any economic aspects or policies will impact on the population," Kong said, pointing out, as a example, that 74,000 people lived in Taipa at the end of last year, while just a decade ago the island was still scarcely populated.
Kong pointed out that while the Chinese central government’s census to be conducted in November will include Macau’s population, the national census will also for the first time map how many Macau people are living in China mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
