Macao citizens yesterday commemorated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with a host of activities.
At the Golden Lotus Square in Zape, a flag-raising ceremony was held in the morning to mark the occasion. The post office issued a set of commemorative stamps featuring historic CPC sites from the past century.
A number of community groups organised their members to watch the live broadcast of yesterday’s ceremony in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square which marked the Party’s centenary. CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered an important speech during the ceremony.
“We have brought about a historic resolution to the problem of absolute poverty in China, and we are now marching with confident strides toward the second centenary goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects,” Xi said.
During the speech, he stressed that the central government exercises overall jurisdiction over Hong Kong and Macao.
“We will stay true to the letter and spirit of the principle of ‘One Country, Two Systems’, under which the people of Hong Kong administer Hong Kong, and the people of Macao administer Macao, both with a high degree of autonomy,” Xi said.
Xi highlighted implementing the legal systems and enforcement mechanisms for the two special administrative regions to safeguard national security.
“While protecting China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests, we will ensure social stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and maintain lasting prosperity and stability in the two special administrative regions,” he said.
Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and the first chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region Edmund Ho Hau Wah, attended the ceremony in Beijing yesterday morning. Edmund Ho attended the event in his capacity as vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, The Macau Post Daily reported.
