“A new chapter in Macao-Portugal friendship and cooperation” has resulted from the just concluded visit to Lisbon by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and a delegation of top officials and business figures, the Macao government says.

In an official statement, authorities said that Ho’s visit – the first overseas trip made by members of the government since the ending of the Covid-19 pandemic – was especially helpful for trade, technology, healthcare and cultural exchanges.

Ho told reporters that Macao was increasingly conscious of its position as an intermediary between China and the lusophone countries. He added that he had welcomed the opportunity to explain to Portugal’s business community the new commercial opportunities available in Macao and Hengqin.

While in Lisbon, Mr Ho held talks with Portugal’s president, prime minister and foreign minister, as well as the mayor of Lisbon.

He also had a meeting with China’s ambassador to Portugal and attended a high level business conference at which 11 cooperation agreements were signed.

Ho is now travelling to Luxembourg on a fact-finding trip to study Europe’s largest bond market. On Monday, he will have talks with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, before heading to Brussels to meet Belgian and EU officials.
