Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On called for the “elimination of different kinds of hidden dangers” during this year’s first plenary meeting of the National Security Defence Commission last week.
According to a statement released by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS), Chui also said during Thursday’s closed-door meeting of the commission that “national security is a political issue and also an issue related to the life of the population.
The chief executive also said the aim of safeguarding national security was to ensure Macau’s continued stability and the lasting development of the implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
Chui, who chairs the commission which was formally set up on October 4 last year, also underlined Macau’s “constitutional duty” to defend national security and to further strengthen citizens’ national security awareness.
The chief executive, whose term ends at midnight on December 19, also instructed all government entities to ensure Macau’s continued peace and social stability this year, which will be marked by a string of celebratory and political events, namely the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, the election of the new chief executive, and the change in government on December 20.
The chief executive election is slated to be held in August.
Thursday’s meeting at Government Headquarters was also attended by Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak, who is the commission’s vice-president, and Secretary for Administration and Justice Sónia Chan Hoi Fan.
The commission, which includes Macau’s top law enforcement officials, held its first plenary meeting on October 5 last year, one day after its formal establishment.
The government is drafting an amendment bill on the setting-up of a special entity within the Judiciary Police (PJ) tasked with assisting the commission in its work, according to the statement.(Macaunews)
