A total of 825 associations are entitled to vote in this year’s chief execcutive election, the government announced Thursday.
According to an official statement, seven associations were suspended and 58 were deleted from the electoral roll. The statement did not elaborate on the reasons for the 65 suspensions and deletions.
The 825 legal entities comprise 99 from the manufacturing, commercial and financial sector; 66 from the labour sector; 54 from the professional sector; 132 from the social services sector; 137 from the culture sector; 24 from the education sector; and 313 from the sport sector.
Nearly 38 percent of the associations represent the sport sector.
Each association has a maximum of 24 votes. The voters will be internally chosen by the respective associations, which, according to an official source, in total will have 344 seats on the 400-member Chief Executive Election Committee.
The other members include lawmakers and local deputies to the National People’s Congress (NPC) and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing.
The chief executive election is slated to be held in the summer. Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On’s re-election is widely seen as a fait accompli.(macaunews)
