Mozambique’s gold production reached a record 800 kilos in 2021, according to a preliminary report released by the Kimberley Process Management Unit (UGPK).
“Production for 2021 had been expected to reach around 550 kilos, but so far we are above 800 kilos,” read the report, adding that in 2020 the republic produced 545 kilos of gold.
According to the report, production could have been even higher but for the restrictions introduced due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
“The analysis of 2021 production is not over, as there is a lack of data from the provinces of Manica, Zambezia and Tete, all in central Mozambique,” read the report.
The UGPK says that 2021 was marked by the creation of mobile technical monitoring brigades which tracked the activities of companies in the sector. In future, teams will be formed to monitor and record the production of gold at artisanal mining sites.
The UGPK wants to persuade artisanal miners to sell their finds to marketing licence holders in order to ensure taxation and increase the state tax revenue from the production of mineral resources, the report noted.
Mozambique’s UGPK is supervised by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy and oversees the production of precious metals and gems in the country.
