A public transport card that can be used throughout Macao, Zhuhai and Hong Kong – as well as in a whopping 336 other cities in China – was officially launched yesterday, according to local media.

The dual currency Zhuhai-Macao Public Transport Card (珠澳聯名公交卡) is a joint initiative of MacauPass and Zhuhai Tong Technology Co. Ltd. According to a post by MacauPass, patacas would be used when spending in Macao, and yuan when in China and Hong Kong.

The card can also be used at over 27,000 acceptance points in Macao, including at eateries and retail outlets. Furthermore, users can enjoy up to 50 percent off local bus and Light Rapid Transit (LRT) tickets. In Zhuhai, users get a 10 percent discount on public transport fares along with free transfers.

Currently, the card cannot be purchased in-person in Macao – but is available online through Zhuhai Tong’s (珠海通) WeChat programme, Xiaohongshu and Douyin. You can also purchase the card in person at the Zhuhai Tong Customer Service Centres in Xiangzhou and Doumen. It costs 58 yuan.

Inconveniently, users must top up each currency via a different avenue, as they are separated into two “wallets”. Topping up your pataca wallet can be done at MacauPass Customer Service Centres or online via MPay. Yuan top-ups can be made through Zhuhai Tong’s WeChat programme and in-person at Zhuhai Tong Customer Service Centres, or other authorised top-up locations.
