Zhuhai has announced a string of restrictions on the entry of vehicles from Macau.
According to Tuesday’s statement by the Zhuhai city government, the restrictions take effect at 10 a.m. today.
The statement, which was relayed to the local media by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS), states only a small segment of vehicles are now allowed to enter the adjacent city from Macau, such as goods vehicles, hearses and emergency vehicles, as well as Macau licence plate vehicles that are permitted to enter Hengqin and the Zhuhai-Macau Cross-Border Industrial Zone.
According to the statement, Guangdong-Macau dual licence plate vehicles and triple licence plate (Guangdong, Macau, Hong Kong) vehicles will be banned from entering Zhuhai until further notice.
A local government source told The Macau Post Daily last night that the restrictions were part of joint efforts by the Macau and Zhuhai authorities to stem the cross-border spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
After the announcement on Tuesday night, hundreds of vehicles reportedly entered Zhuhai from Macau yesterday to beat today’s deadline, resulting in huge traffic jams. Some drivers said they needed to wait about three hours before they could cross the border.
Both Zhuhai and Macau have tightened their entry regulations on border crossers as part of their anti-COVID-19 measures.
