Macao’s number of visitor arrivals grew by 29.6 per cent month-to-month to 581,986 last month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement on Tuesday.
However, last month’s number of visitor arrivals was down by 81.9 per cent year-on-year.
Overnight visitors and same-day visitors totalled 308,222 and 273,764 respectively.
The statement pointed out that due to a growth of 7.0 percentage points in the proportion of overnight visitors to 53.0 per cent of the total number of visitor arrivals, visitors’ average length of stay rose by 0.2 day year-on-year to 1.4 days. Overnight visitors’ average length of stay rose by 0.3 day year-on-year to 2.7 days.
Mainlanders accounted for 92.7 per cent of all visitor arrivals. There were 37,909 visitors from Hong Kong and 4,574 from Taiwan last month.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign nationals without a local residency permit have been barred from entering Macao since March. About 93 per cent of last month’s visitors arrived by land. Visitor arrivals by air and sea totalled 26,778 and 11,711 respectively.
In the first ten months, the number of visitor arrivals dropped by 86.2 per cent year-on-year to 4.6 million.
Macao recorded 39.1 million visitor arrivals last year, a year-on-year growth of 10.1 per cent.
Macao’s first COVID-19 case was confirmed on 22 January. Macao has not confirmed a new COVID-19 case for 151 days. The Health Bureau (SSM) has classified 44 of Macao’s 46 novel coronavirus cases as imported, while two cases have been classified as “connected to imported cases.”
