The urban master plan for developing the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) up to 2040  has been gazetted by the Lands, Public Works and Transport Bureau.

Under the plan, the MSAR will be divided into 18 categories based on its current demographic features, including areas for residential estates, businesses, industries, tourism and entertainment, public facilities, ecological conservation, public infrastructure, green space and public open space.

The plan highlights the need to position Macao as a key city within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), enhance its international and regional status, deepen spatial functions and advance the general plan for building the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone on Zhuhai city’s Hengqin island.

The plan is committed to promoting integration between Macao and the other parts of the GBA, and achieving appropriate diversification of Macao’s economy, while conserving the MSAR’s historical and cultural heritage.

It also aims to develop Macao into a world centre for tourism and leisure and a “beautiful home” for its residents.
