The University of Macau (UM) pledged in a statement Tuesday that the CCTV cameras installed in some of its classrooms would only be switched on during exams, after some local media reported earlier this week that the public university was planning to install CCTV cameras in all its classrooms for security reasons.
The statement was sent to local newspapers last night.
Government-owned broadcaster TDM’s Portuguese-language radio channel – Radio Macau – on Monday reported that the university had so far installed cameras in 19 classrooms that would be used as venues for English certificate exams, quoting UM as saying that the CCTV cameras there would not have voice recordings.
The university responded to the media reports by saying in its statement that as there was no urgency in installing more CCTV camera systems in classrooms, the university had decided to refrain from doing so, adding that the cameras that have already been installed in the classrooms would only be used during exam periods.
The statement, which could not be found on UM’s website, said that the university had always followed the law when installing the campus CCTV camera system, and had also consulted the Office for Personal Data Protection (GPDP), adding that it had also always abided by the Personal Data Protection Law concerning the handling of information obtained through CCTV cameras.(Macaunews)
