Forecasters have warned that Signal No 8 may be raised this afternoon or early evening as Typhoon Nalgae makes course for Macao.

At 7 am this morning, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau said that Nalgae was 280 km from Macao and would edge to within 100 kilometres of the city between this afternoon and early tomorrow morning.

However, under the influence of the northeast monsoon, Nalgae will gradually weaken.

The possibility of issuing Typhoon Signal No 8 from this afternoon or evening is “medium to relatively high” because the forecast track and the degree of weakening still remain uncertain.

Under the combined effect of Nalgae and the northeast monsoon, it is expected that winds will increase generally to a scale of 6-7, occasionally 8, with severe gusts. Showers will become stronger.

It is expected to be cloudy and cooler in the next few days, with frequent showers. Early this morning, there was a slight flood in the Southern Inner Harbour area.

Due to the next astronomical high tide, and Nalgae’s proximity to Macao, flooding is likely to reoccur in the Inner Harbour area tonight and tomorrow morning.
