Signal No 3 will be hoisted at 2 pm as Typhoon Ma-on is “quickly” approaching the western coast of Guangdong province, The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) has announced.

The bureau has said that the possibility of hoisting Signal No 8 between tonight and tomorrow morning is high, while the issuing of Signal No 9 is low.

Local weather is expected to become unstable starting this afternoon and the winds in Macao will intensify tonight with strong gusts, frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms, the weather bureau said.

Typhoon Ma-on is currently located about 490 kilometres southeast of Macao, moving towards the west of the Pearl River Estuary, to which the tropical storm will be closest from this evening to tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, the bureau issued a yellow storm surge warning at 11 am this morning. Under the influence of expected storm surges and continuous rainfall, it is expected that there will be flooding in low-lying areas between 4 am to noon tomorrow.
