Traffic accidents drop 6.5 pct to 13,764 in 2018

Macau’s traffic accidents decreased by 6.5 percent to 13,764 last year, resulting in 4,390 casualties including 10 fatalities, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

Macau’s traffic accidents decreased by 6.5 percent to 13,764 last year, resulting in 4,390 casualties including 10 fatalities, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

On average, the traffic police recorded 37.7 traffic accidents per day in 2018.

The city’s number of licensed motor vehicles dipped by 0.6 percent to 240,145 last year.

Scooters decreased by 10.5 percent to 26,256, while private cars rose by 0.8 percent to 108,442 and motorcycles increased by 0.9 percent to 97,822.

New registrations of motor vehicles fell by 13.7 percent to 14,509 last year. New motorcycle registrations decreased by 25.4 percent to 7,374.

Cross-border vehicular traffic grew by 2.3 percent to 4.9 million trips last year. Some 68 percent of the traffic passed through the Barrier Gate checkpoint and30.5 percent through the Cotai checkpoint, while the remainder passed through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint, which opened in October.
