Speaking about the Macau Polytechnic Institute’s (IPM) new bachelor’s programme in International Chinese Language Education, Lu Jianming, a professor at Peking University’s (PKU) Department of Chinese Language and Literature, said on Tuesday the course was an example of the local government’s efforts in promoting Chinese language education.

The professor spoke to reporters after giving a public lecture at the institute in Zape. The 81-year-old scholar said he believed that some of the programme’s future graduates will make a contribution to Chinese language education in Portuguese-speaking countries.

According to the IPM website, the four-year programme, which will be launched in August, is for both native and non-native Chinese speakers. The programme will be conducted in Putonghua, Cantonese, English and Portuguese, according to the website.

“To my knowledge, Portugal attaches great importance to Chinese language education. Some primary and secondary schools there have proposed to start Chinese lessons. Macau students will have advantages in this aspect [teaching Chinese in Portugal],” Lu said, adding that Macau would benefit greatly by making an effort to develop its Chinese language education.
