Population density dips to 21,100

Macau’s population density dropped from 21,400 inhabitants per square kilometer in 2016 to 21,100 last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement Thursday.

Macau’s population density dropped from 21,400 inhabitants per square kilometer in 2016 to 21,100 last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement Thursday.

Irrespective of the slight decrease, Macau’s continues to be one of the world’s most densely populated regions, according to World Bank data.

Macau’s land area measured 30.8 square kilometers at the end of last year, up by 0.3 square kilometers year-on-year.

Macau recorded eight tropical cyclones last year. The typhoon signal No. 10 – the highest storm warning signal – was hoisted when Super Typhoon Hato hit the city on August 23 last year, the first time the signal was issued since 2000. Hato killed 10 people and caused massive damage.

The number of days with acid rain stood at 66 last year.
