The Philippine Consulate General in Macau hosted a celebration to mark the 120th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, at Clube Militar Tuesday.

The celebration was themed “Independence 2018: Change We Fought For, An Offering to An Abundant Future.”

Addressing guests at the event, Consul General Lilybeth Deapera said, “It has been 120 years since the Philippines regained independence and forged its own path towards democracy…I am confident that the Filipino people, no matter where they are in the world, and in whatever occupation they hold, we will continue to be brilliant, unified, and united in creating a better and safer world for our future generations.”

Deapera highlighted that the Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. Pointing out that the island nation’s economy grew about six percent for the sixth straight year in 2017, she was optimistic that the economic growth would continue this year.

She underlined that Secretary for Administration and Justice Sonia Chan Hoi Fan led an official delegation to the Philippines in March on judiciary cooperation, adding she believed cooperation between Macau and the Philippines will further strengthen in the years to come.

Chan, who represented the local government at the celebration, expressed her congratulations in a speech, saying that the Macau government would further enhance cooperation through fruitful discussions between the two sides.

The celebration also featured performances such as a traditional folk dance.

Philippine nationals are Macau’s number-one non-Chinese ethnic community, numbering about 30,000, comprising residents and migrant workers.
