A male suspect who works for the Public Security Forces was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in bogus credit card fraud amounting to 12,000 patacas, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said at a special press briefing on Thursday.

The spokesperson said the suspect, who is 47 years old, has been working for the government since 1995. The spokesperson did not reveal the suspect’s surname or other information about him.

According to a statement on the website of the Office of the Secretary for Security, the suspect, surnamed Chao, is a department head at the Macau Customs Service.

The PJ spokesperson said the police discovered that the suspect was involved with a counterfeit credit card gang, comprising locals and mainlanders.

The police arrested the suspect’s sister, a boutique owner, and five other suspected gang members in the case in April.

After investigating, the police discovered that the suspect and his sister had made at least five bogus credit-card transactions in March at his sister’s boutique, two of which were successful. The amount involved was 12,000 patacas.

The suspect received a 15 percent commission on each successful transaction from the gang, which was a total of 1,800 patacas, according to the spokesperson.

The police arrested Chao at his office on Wednesday. He has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further investigation and possible arraignment on a credit card fraud charge, according to the spokesperson.
