Macau’s population had risen to 649,100 at the end of the first quarter, an increase of 2,300 inhabitants quarter-to-quarter, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Tuesday.
Based on Macau’s land area of 30.4 square kilometres, the special administrative region’s population density per sq km stood at 21,352, reportedly the highest in the world.
The population included 181,436 non-resident workers.
In the first quarter, 2,695 mainland Chinese were authorised to settle in Macau, up by 514 quarter-to-quarter.
Some 51 per cent of the population was female. A total of 1,664 live births were delivered in the first quarter, down by 10.6 per cent from the previous quarter. The sex ratio at birth stood at 109.6, corresponding to 106.9 male babies per 100 females.
