Macao’s population reached 683,100 at the end of last year – and that’s official.
The Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced that the population has grown by 3,500.
Females accounted for 53.2 per cent of the population, while over-65s make up 12.9 per cent, a year-on-year growth of 1.0 percentage point.
The local population, excluding non-resident workers and non-local students living in Macao, increased by 1.6 per cent year-on-year to 564,100.
Young people, meaning children from babies to 14-year-olds accounted for 16.1 per cent.
The DSEC has noted that the elderly dependency ratio for the local population was 22.9 per cent in 2020, indicating that about five adults supported one senior citizen.
A total of 2,754 couples got married last year, down by 26 per cent year-on-year. The median age at first marriage was 30 years for males and 28.2 years for females. And a total of 1,319 couples got divorced.
At the end of last year, Macao’s households had risen by 2,200 to 199,700.
A total of 2,230 deaths were recorded in Macao last year.
The number of non-resident workers stood at 177,663 at the end of December, a drop of 18,875 year-on-year. The decline in the number of non-resident workers has been attributed to the impact of the Covid-19.
