Macau’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre said in a statement Wednesday night that a suspected case of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has been detected.

According to the statement, the patient is a 19-year-old Macau resident studying in the United Kingdom.

The student left the UK en route to Macau via Hong Kong on Monday. Upon arrival in Macau, Health Bureau (SSM) ordered her to go into home quarantine for 14 days.

Today, samples taken from the patient’s throat detected a preliminarily positive result based on a nucleic acid test, according to the statement, which described the patient’s condition as “normal”.

She is undergoing further swab tests at the special emergency department of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital, the statement noted.
