Jobless rate stays at 1.7%

Macau’s general unemployment rate, which comprises local and non-resident workers, and local residents’ jobless rate remained unchanged at 1.7% and 2.3% respectively in the November 2019-January 2020 survey period.

Macau’s general unemployment rate, which comprises local and non-resident workers, and local residents’ jobless rate remained unchanged at 1.7 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively in the November 2019-January 2020 survey period, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Tuesday.

Both rates stayed the same compared with the October-December 2019 and November 2018-January 2019 survey periods.

Macau’s total labour force stood at 399,900, while its labour force participation rate amounted to 70.7 per cent in November 2019-January 2020.

Total employment was 393,100 and the number of employed residents totalled 284,700, up by 3,300 and 3,100 from the previous survey period.

While the wholesale and retail sector increased its employment, the transport, storage and communications sector’s number of employees decreased.

The number of jobless rose by 100 to 6,800. New labour market entrants looking for their first job accounted for 14.4 per cent of the total number of unemployed.

Macau’s population stood at 679,600 at the end of last year, including 196,538 non-resident workers.
