The final piece of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge – a 35-tonne expansion joint – was placed last Tuesday, announced in Zhuhai city the director of the Bridge Authority, Zhu Yongling.

Zhu said that placement of this final piece means that construction work on the bridge, which has a deck 22.9 kilometres long, is now completed.

The Hong Kong/Zhuhai/Macau bridge, which should be opened to traffic at the end of 2017, which also includes a 6.7-kilometre submarine tunnel, is 55 kilometres long in total.

When put into service, this bridge will link Zhuhai and Macau, on one side and Hong Kong, on the other, and cut travel time from 4 hours to 30 minutes.

The bridge was designed to have a lifespan of 120 years and in total will cost 100 billion yuan (US$15 billion dollars), according to the China Daily newspaper.(Macau News / Macauhub)
