The government will subsidise local companies which collect rubbish for recycling, Executive Council spokesman Leong Heng Teng said on Wednesday.

Leong, who announced the government’s latest subsidy during a press conference about various issues at Government Headquarters, said the subsidy would help such companies buy equipment and/or vehicles.

Each company, which must have been in business for at least a year, can apply for up to 1.5 million patacas in subsidies covering up to 50 percent of the purchase price of the equipment and/or vehicles.

Leong said the aim of the new subsidy was to help the companies improve their business prospects.

According to the press conference, about 70 companies can potentially benefit from the subsidy.

Leong said the government had set aside 16 million patacas for the scheme next year.

The subsidies will be handled by the government’s Environmental Protection and Energy Conservation Fund, Leong said.

The Executive Council is the government’s top advisory body.
