An exhibition entitled “The Long Journey: The Forbidden City and Maritime Silk Road” at the Macau Museum of Art (MAM) is showcasing nearly 150 cultural artefacts from the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing.
According to the exhibition’s leaflet, the cultural artefacts on display are mostly from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including tributes presented by foreign envoys, gifts and items brought by Western missionaries, and pieces of calligraphy and paintings created in the court by these missionaries, as well as various goods purchased by, or custom-made for the court, or made in imperial or provincial workshops by imitating and creatively adapting imported products, in addition to items from MAM’s own collection.
The leaflet points out that these artefacts reflect the fruitful exchanges and interactions between the court and the outside world during the Ming and Qing dynasties as well as the glorious prosperity of the Forbidden City and the “Maritime Silk Road” civilisations.
Visitors can pick up postcards bearing images of the artworks with descriptions. The postcards are free of charge.
The exhibition in the 4th floor gallery of the museum at the Macau Cultural Centre complex runs until April 13. It opens daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (no admission after 6:30 p.m.). It is closed on Mondays but open on public holidays. Admission is free.
In addition, the museum also offers “Two Big Rewards for The Long Journey”, an online game that gives visitors a chance to win creative items from the Palace Museum. The online game runs until March 29. For more details, please visit www.mam.gov.mo/game/2020.
All visitors to the museum must wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health declaration.
