There is no “back to school” schedule for non-tertiary education yet as the date would depend on Macau and its surrounding areas’ COVID-19 situation, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau’s (DSEJ) Department of Education Chief Kong Ngai said on Thursday at the daily press conference by the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre at the Health Bureau (SSM).
Pupils’ safety was the primary factor of consideration by the bureau, Kong said.
Kong pointed out that pupils are too young and vulnerable to take care of themselves, apart from the fact that schools are crowded areas, so the schedule of resuming classes could only be arranged after the social environment was back to normal, Kong added.
The date of class resumption would be announced at least one week before school is to restart, Kong vowed.
The bureau has had meetings with school heads and concluded that no exams or tests would be arranged in the first two weeks after classes resume, but time would rather be spent on course revision first, Kong stressed.
For the first two weeks after classes resumed, Kong also said that the schools would deal with pupils’ absence in a “flexible” way.
