Lei Ka Chon, a member of the Central District Community Service Consultative Council, suggested on Wednesday that the government pay attention to the public security problem in Rua da Emenda (I Chi Kai).

Lei made the remarks during a regular meeting of the council held at the Activity Centre of the Patana Municipal Market.

To ensure the safety of residents living in Rua da Emenda, there should be more police on patrol in the area and the authorities should increase the number of street lights or add a street lighting system with a lamp post height of less than two metres, as poorly lit streets are indirectly related to the crime rate in the district, Lei said, pointing out that “the darker the street, the higher the crime rate”.

He underlined that Rua da Emenda is densely populated and popular with foreigners, adding that there are many people drinking nearby every night.

“Walking past in the dark makes many pedestrians feel worried. There have been a string of crimes such as harassment, theft, drug trafficking, and drunken fights involving foreigners in Rua da Emenda last year, reflecting the serious security risks in the area,” he said.

Lei underlined that the government has started the installation of 800 “Eyes in the Sky” CCTV cameras this year. Lei said he hoped that relevant authorities will pay attention to the public security needs of the area and include them in the scope of the “Eyes in the Sky” system to deter criminals and prevent crimes.
