Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng urged civil society on Thursday to be “positive” about the preservation of Coloane Village known for its traditional shipyards.
Tam made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an education forum held at Kao Yip School in Nape.
Tam said he had not been informed beforehand about the demolition of two shipyards in the village by the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) on Wednesday.
The bureau announced in late January that 11 dilapidated shipyards in the village were earmarked for demolition starting this month. The bureau also said that the demolition of two shipyards, the tumbledown conditions of which it said were worse than the others, would begin this month, to be followed by the other nine.
The bureau is under portfolio of Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosario.
Tam said that the demolition of the two shipyards was to take public safety into consideration.
Tam pointed out that the redevelopment of the village will be led by the Lands, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT) and that the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) have been asked to take part in the redevelopment.
Tam said that the Cultural Affairs Bureau would actively engage in the redevelopment of the village by giving its opinions on heritage protection.
Tam said he hoped the village could become a beautiful leisure area for residents and tourists alike to enjoy.
