In the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2018, a total of 18 restaurants in Macau have been awarded stars, while Galaxy’s Terrazza lost its single star that it had received for the 2017 edition.
The Macau section of the latest edition of the dining guideline was announced at a press conference Thursday by the French tyre company at City of Dreams .
The 18 local eateries in the 2018 edition comprise two restaurants with three stars, five restaurants with two stars, and 11 restaurants with one star.
According to the Michelin Guide, in order to maintain the independence of inspectors’ views, the inspectors of the guidebook always dine anonymously and rate their culinary experience according to five assessment criteria: the quality of the products, the mastery of flavour and cooking techniques, the personality of the chef in his cuisine, the value for money, and the consistency between visits.
The Michelin Guide first covered Hong Kong and Macau in 2009, and this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau.
Describing the increasing number of the starred restaurants in the two cities included in the guidebook, Michelin Guides’ International Director Michael Ellis said, “Ten years after the introduction of the very first Michelin guide selection for Hong Kong and Macau, we are pleased to note the vibrancy of the local culinary scene: the number of starred restaurants has been multiplied by three.”
Macau’s two 2018 three-star eateries are Robuchon au Dome and The Eight, both at Grand Lisboa.
The city’s five two-star restaurants are Feng Wei Ju at StarWorld, Golden Flower and Mizumi at Wynn Macau and The Tasting Room and Jade Dragon at City of Dreams.
Golden Flower, Mizumi and The Tasting Room kept two stars, while Tim’s Kitchen, The Golden Peacock, Wing Lei and Zi Yat Heen retained their one-star rating.
The 11 one-star eateries include King, a Cantonese restaurant at AIA Tower, the only one of Macau’s Michelin-starred eateries outside a gaming establishment.
The 2018 list also includes nine “Bib Gourmand” recommended restaurants such as the IFT Educational Restaurant, Tou Tou Koi and Lou Kei in Fai Chi Kei and Castiço in Taipa.
According to Wikipedia, since 1955, the guide has also highlighted restaurants offering “exceptionally good food at moderate prices,” a feature now called “Bib Gourmand”. Bib, aka Bibendum, is the company’s nickname for the Michelin Man, its corporate logo for over a century.
Meanwhile, Grand Lisboa Hotel pointed out in a statement last night that it “is the world’s only dining destination boasting seven Michelin stars under one roof”.
According to the statement, with the Chinese fine-dining restaurant The Eight and French restaurant Rebuchon au Dome, Grand Lisboa is now also the only hotel in Macau to boast two three-Michelin-starred restaurants.
Grand Lisboa’s The Kitchen was awarded one Michelin star.
