One-third of Macau’s child sex abuse cases last year occurred in education institutions such as private tuition centres, Judiciary Police (PJ) Director Sit Chong Meng said Thursday.
Sit made the remarks during a Chinese New Year gathering and luncheon for the media at the PJ headquarters in Zape.
During the gathering, Sit announced the PJ crime figures for last year.
According to Sit, the overall number of cases the Judiciary Police recorded last year increased by 11.7 percent to 14,108.
The 2018 crime figures announced by the Judiciary Police yesterday did not include those from the Public Security Police (PSP), Macau Customs Service and other law-enforcement agencies under the Secretariat for Security.
Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak is expected to announce Macau’s overall 2016 crime statistics soon.
According to Sit, the Judiciary Police launched investigations into 33 cases of sex abuse of minors under the age of 16 last year, 24 of which were cases of sex abuse of those under the age of 14.
According to Sit, PJ officers found that most of last year’s cases of sex abuse of minors under the age of 14 were conducted by those who the victims were familiar with.
Sit said that one third of such cases occurred in education institutions such as private tuition centres.
