The Urban Planning Committee (CPU) held its 7th plenary meeting for this year yesterday and passed a draft plan for the development of the land that currently houses a petrol station on Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen in Taipa. The privately-owned land in question is 1,008 square metres.

The development plan recommended that the land be used for the construction of a building up to 90 metres high and that it be set aside for residential, commercial or entertainment purposes.

Although the project’s exact nature has yet to be determined, the head of the Department of Urban Planning of Land and Urban Construction Bureau (DSSCU), Leong Io Hong, said during the meeting that a new hotel or a residential complex are being considered.

If the plan does go ahead, 621 square metres of the land will need to be handed over to the government for use as a street.

In response to the petrol station that is currently using the land, Leong noted that it would not hinder the development plan, as the governmental approval of the construction of the station was based on the understanding that its use of the land would be temporary.

According to Leong, it will be up to the station’s owners to decide whether or not they wish to move their business elsewhere or to close down.

This plan follows last year’s announcement of a 2020-2040 Master Plan that splits the city’s land into 18 areas, in addition to diversifying Macao’s economy and improving residential areas through rezoning and redevelopment.
