Hong Kong confirmed today 26,908 new Covid-19 cases and 286 deaths as health experts warned they did not expect infections to decline any time soon.
A total of 14,868 infections were logged through an online government portal by residents using at-home rapid antigen tests (RATs), while 12,040 cases were confirmed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screenings.
According to South China Morning Post, Professor Lau Yu-lung, who chairs the government’s Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases, says local infections have plateaued and will remain steady for three to six weeks.
An assistant professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s school of public health, Kwok Kin-on, estimated that the daily number of infections would not return to four-digit range until late May, and would take another month for it to decline to about 100.
Hong Kong’s overall Covid-19 tally today stood at 733,785 cases – 721,154 cases logged during the fifth wave, or 98 per cent of the total – with a total of 4,279 fatalities.
