Tencent Web (qq.com), one of the mainland’s largest Internet companies, announced on Monday that its coverage has been extended to Macau.

The announcement was made during a press conference at Macau Tower.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the press conference, Tencent Guangdong Web – Macau General Manager Lai Chi Kong said the company made the announcement to let local companies and the government know that Tencent Web has set up a division in Macau to promote new media and how to become a smart city.

However, Lai refused to elaborate on the company’s plans and directions in promoting the smart city concept in Macau. He also said the company still needed to familiarise itself with the city’s new media market to decide how it could attract local enterprises to become involved with Tencent.

According to the press conference, Tencent Guangdong Web – Macau has partnered with seven local media companies, namely UEPAY, ALLWAY MACAU, Exmoo, Macau Speaking, Chessman, Zamag Macau, and Good.

Addressing the press conference, Tencent Guangdong Web Chairwoman Yi Haiyan said the company aimed to enhance co-operation and economic interaction between the mainland and Macau.

Yi said extending the Tencent Web to Macau would help promote local brands and products from Portuguese-speaking countries to the mainland market.
