Japanese retail giant MUJI will open its first Macao store to the public today, offering over 7,000 household and consumer goods, from clothes, beauty products and stationery to furniture, kitchen utensils, travel items and various food products.

Covering around 1,950 square metres in the Grand Canal Street area of The Venetian Macao, the two-floor store is larger in size than any of the company’s other stores in Hong Kong, where MUJI first opened in 2001.

On the lower floor, natural materials like wood, stone and metal are used in the store’s design to give a sense of nature to customers, while the upper floor shows more metal and steel.

MUJI, which promotes an ideology of “a simple, pleasant life”, also presents in its new store a 700-metre home living thematic display area, where simple-designed, versatile and compatible MUJI furniture and storage items are arranged to create scenes of living room, dining room and bedroom as ideas for customers.

There is also a Sleep Experience Zone, where customers can try out different pillows, mattresses and bed frames.

To celebrate the new store’s opening, from today through 18 December, customers are entitled to a complimentary Macao store jute bag for any single net spending of a minimum MOP 300 – limited to 600 pieces daily and while stocks last.

Established in 1980, MUJI has a minimalistic design philosophy, placing an emphasis on recycling, reducing production and packaging waste, and no logo or brand policy. The brand’s name was taken from the first part of Mujirushi Ryōhin, meaning No-Brand Quality Goods, according to the company, which operates 493 stores across Japan and 579 stores overseas.
