Macao’s cashless payment platform MPay is joining with Alipay+ to offer users international coverage, and hopes to be available in more than 40 countries by the end of 2024.

According to multiple media reports, MPay will be available in several Asian countries, Australia, the UK, the EU, the UAE, the US and more. Users must be Macao residents and have 3A, 3B or JR status on the MPay app.

App developer Macau Pass says that eligible users will be able to pay with MPay overseas by switching to the Alipay+ payment code wherever participating merchants are displaying the Alipay+ sign.

Chairman and CEO of Macau Pass, Sun Ho, told media that the move was intended to solve issues encountered “with payment while travelling overseas, thus improving travellers’ payment and shopping experience.”

He added that the plan “will also bring more cross-border businesses and tourism growth opportunities for global merchants.”

Macau Pass was acquired last March by Alibaba subsidiary AGTech Holdings. Alibaba is the owner of Alipay.
