Macao’s imports of mobile phones rocketed by 800 per cent to MOP 12.36 billion in the first seven months of the year, reflecting a general across-the-board increase.
The Statistics and Census Bureau noted that July’s mobile phone imports increased by 653.8 per cent to MOP 2.1 billion year-on-year.
Mobile phones were Macao’s number-two import item between January and July, after imports of beauty, cosmetic and skincare products which grew by 254.5 per cent to MOP 14.02 billion.
Other major import items in the first seven months of the year were food and beverages (up 40.2 per cent to MOP 7.9 billion), garments and footwear (up 148.5 per cent to MOP 7.8 billion), watches (up 360.3 per cent to MOP 7.5 billion), handbags and wallets (up 276.3 per cent to MOP 6.5 billion), and gold jewellery (up 436.9 per cent to MOP 5.9 billion).
Total imports rose by 143.6 per cent to MOP 89.2 billion between January and July, while exports increased by 29.5 per cent to MOP 7.8 billion. Re-exports accounted for 86 per cent of all exports.
Seventy per cent of Macao’s exports in the first seven months were shipped to Hong Kong and 15 per cent to the Chinese mainland.
Most imports originated from the mainland (33.2 per cent), France (16.9 per cent) and Italy (11.3 per cent), The Macau Post Daily reported.
