Macao’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in May increased by 24.8 per cent month-on-month to MOP 3.34 billion, according to data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), as Macao recorded 136,647 visitors during this year’s Golden Week.

Still, it was a 68 per cent decrease compared to May 2021 and the figure is also lower than March’s GGR of MOP 3.67 billion. Last month’s GGR ended with MOP 2.67 billion.

Macao’s total GGR in the first five months decreased by 44 per cent year-on-year to MOP 23.79 billion.

Prior to the pandemic, the combined GGR of this year’s first five months decreased by 81 per cent from MOP 125.69 billion in 2019, while May’s GGR this year decreased by 87.1 per cent from MOP 25.95 billion

Macao has recently relaxed border restrictions with some areas of mainland China but the visa control on frequent gamblers to Macao plus the Covid-19 outbreaks in areas like Beijing and Shanghai may still affect the number of mainland Chinese visitors to the SAR.
