Macau’s number of imported workers – popularly known as blue card holders – reached 179,416 at the end of last month, up 17.8 percent year-on-year, the Human Resources Office (GRH) has announced.
Macau’s total workforce stood at 405,800 in April, according to the latest available employment figures by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).
Mainlanders accounted for 65.3 percent of all non-local workers. Most mainlanders – 42,915 – were employed by the construction sector. Some 71.6 percent of all non-resident workers came from the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Foreigners made up the remainder.
The number of workers imported from the Philippines rose from 20,019 in May last year to 22,803 last month. Some 48.5 percent of all Philippine workers were employed as domestic helpers.
Vietnamese made up the third largest group of imported labour. Their number rose 9.8 percent year-on-year to 13,929.
Other major imported labour segments came from Hong Kong (9,744), Indonesia (4,039) and Nepal (3,430).
The number of workers from Myanmar leapt 70.7 percent from 693 in May last year to 1,183 last month.
A total of 403 workers were imported from the US, 356 from the UK, 293 from Australia, 141 each from Japan and Canada, and 148 from Singapore.
