A second Islamic Culture in Tourism Workshop was arranged by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) yesterday, as part of the government’s efforts to expand into tourism markets in Islamic countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

The workshop, which targeted employees from different sectors of the tourism industry, discussed Islam and provided participants with information regarding Muslim visitors.

According to a MGTO statement, the event was intended to familiarise tourism employees “with the religion of Islam so that their services can better cater to the needs of Islamic visitors.”

The second workshop was organised in response to the popularity of the inaugural workshop, which was held back in March 2023.

Attending the event was MGTO chief, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, and the Imam of the Islamic Association of Macau, Ding Shao Jie, who was once again the main presenter.

Macao is looking to expand its tourism markets over the coming year, with a focus on Southeast Asia and Northeast Asian countries.

Concrete steps have already been taken, including direct flights between Macao and Indonesia which began late last month.
