Macao’s airport operator said on Wednesday that losses in 2022 deepened by more than 9 percent to 567 million patacas. It cited “the ongoing impact of the pandemic” during the year.
Macao International Airport Company Limited, known by its Portuguese initials CAM, added that revenues also fell 26.7 percent last year to 426 million patacas.
According to the news agency Lusa, CAM said “daily operations, financial income and even the implementation of business development plans and infrastructure projects at the airport” were “profoundly affected” by Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The airport registered 13,642 landings and take-offs in 2022, 13.6 percent less than in 2021, while the number of passengers dropped by almost half to less than 600,000, Lusa reports.
However, with the reopening of borders, CAM expects 2023 to be a “brilliant year” and says an increase in share capital to 6.28 billion patacas will help it “support the necessary expenses for future development”.
With pandemic travel restrictions lifted, passenger numbers at Macao’s airport exceeded 750,000 in the first quarter of 2023. CAM attributed the surge mostly to traffic between Macao and mainland China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia
