Shun Tak Holdings chairman Pansy Ho has been nominated to the board of China’s largest airline, according to multiple media reports.

Ho, who is also an executive director of Air Macau and vice-chairman of the board of Macau International Airport, will have her nomination put to the vote at a meeting of shareholders of China Southern Airlines on 3 August, according to TDM.

In terms of fleet size, route network, and passenger capacity, the Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines is the country’s biggest. It operates more than 10 subsidiaries, offering an average 2000 flights a day to 208 destinations in 40 countries.

As a standing committee member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference,  an executive committee member of the All-China Women’s Federation, and an executive president of All-China Federation of Tourism Chambers of Commerce, Ho is a high-profile figure in mainland Chinese affairs. However, she has not, to date, sat on the board of a mainland listed company.

The news of Ho’s nomination comes in the wake of an  announcement in May that a draft law to end Air Macau’s status as the territory’s sole airline would be put to the legislature.

Air Macau was given an exclusive contract for the transport of passengers and cargo in 1995, but the government has recently been under pressure to liberalise the local aviation sector.
