The Macao Institute for Tourism Studies is now called the Macao University of Tourism, according to a statement released on Monday. The name change took effect on 1 April.

Its name in Portuguese has become Universidade de Turismo de Macau, and it will take the Portuguese initials UTM. In Chinese, the university will be called 澳門旅遊大學.

UTM has also changed its domain name for its official website to utm.edu.mo from  iftm.edu.mo. The old address will continue working until the end of 2025.

Last December, lawmaker Ella Lei said that the institution’s rebrand would more accurately reflect the quality of instruction at IFTM, which was rated the tenth best place in the world to study hospitality and leisure management in the QR World University Rankings last year.

UTM is a public tertiary institution offering degree programmes and instruction to students who are interested in pursuing a career in the tourism and hospitality industry.

“With the most diverse range of tourism and hospitality programmes in Macao, UTM is committed to providing talent to support the development of Macao as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure,” its statement read.
