The 929 Challenge is returning this year for its third edition, with finals scheduled for co-organiser Forum Macao’s 20th anniversary celebrations in October.
The annual competition sees startups, entrepreneurs and academics, from both the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Portuguese-speaking countries, pitch their ideas in the hopes of a share in a US$20,000 prize pool.
The event is named for the nine cities that (with the addition of Macao and Hong Kong) make up the GBA, and the nine lusophone countries of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.

Organisers say the aim of the 929 Challenge – co-founded in 2021 by Macao-based entrepreneur Marco Duarte Rizzolio and City University of Macau’s José Alves – is the “creation of business ideas that connect China and Portuguese-speaking countries” and develop “sustainable business ideas and strengthen cross-border trade relations”.
As in previous years, competing teams will be divided into university and startup categories.
