Thirty-seven sailing teams from around the world are competing in the 2024 MGM Macao International Regatta, which kicked off yesterday. Its three multi-race competitions are being held over four days, winding up on 14 January.

Two races into the eight-race Macao Cup – the regatta’s headline event – South Africa’s ExeQute Racing are starting day two in the lead, according to its official website. Germany’s Canados Sailing Team is sitting in second place, with Estonia’s Team Windy rounding out the top three.

Last year’s Chinese champion, the Big Boys Sailing Team, is currently in fifth place – though there’s plenty of time for everything to change.

The regatta’s two other competitions are the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta and the International Catamaran Invitational.

The Macao and Greater Bay Area Cups are being held in waters south of Hac Sa Beach, while the International Catamaran Invitational is taking place in the Macao Channel (near the Macao Science Centre).

Regatta-themed family fun days have been scheduled for 13 and 14 January, at the Kun Iam Statue Waterfront Recreation Area, the Sports Bureau has said, with sailing experiences and workshops, as well as live broadcasts of the races. Admission is free.

Keen photographers capturing images of the sailing can meanwhile enter the event’s photography competition. Trophies and prize money are up for grabs.

The 2024 MGM Macao International Regatta’s main organisers are the Sports Bureau, MGM and Ursa Major Sailing Management.
