Officials hope to expand Macao’s marine tourism offerings

For a city with such a long maritime history, Macao offers visitors few chances to experience it from the sea. That could change.

The Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) is considering ways to develop Macao’s marine tourism sector, according to the department’s deputy director Kuok Kin.

Speaking at TDM’s radio program, Macau Forum, Kuok noted that Macao has an abundance of maritime resources and the capacity to develop an array of waterborne excursions and attractions. He said that DSAMA has been working to promote further collaboration between stakeholders to launch activities such as sightseeing cruises.

“We believe that Macao has its own unique traits when it comes to cruises,” he noted.

“It has the inner harbour waters, which has a long history. [From there] you can see the inner harbour pier and our traditional fisheries. At the same time, Macao has a very modern leisure tourism area. These are visible from both sides of Macao’s waterway.”

Currently, Macao’s local cruise industry is underdeveloped, with only a handful of options for residents and travellers to sightsee the city by boat. One recent offering is the MGM sightseeing cruise that takes participants between Barra and Coloane.

The DSAMA is currently calling on different sectors in the city to offer suggestions during a 50-day public consultation on the zoning of maritime areas and new legislation that concerns the use of the city’s coastal waters.
